Accountant (I – III)

Company Description:

Thermal Engineering Corporation (TEC) is a consulting engineering firm specializing in mechanical and fire protection engineering.  TEC has experience in the design of air conditioning, ventilation, plumbing, pumps and piping, automatic fire suppression, fire alarm, power generation and heavy industrial systems.  Incorporated in Hawaii in 1978, the firm provides a wide range of engineering services including engineering investigations and studies, planning studies, design, and construction management services for new and existing facilities.  

Position Description:

We are seeking a responsible and organized individual with accounting experience to apply the principles of accounting to analyze financial information and perform professional accounting work including performing the day-to-day tasks of account maintenance and cash management, processing payroll, periodic tax related filings and payments, processing and reconciliation of general ledger accounts, preparation of financial reports, interpretation of financial data, conducting internal audits and reconciliations, prepares budget, and year-end reports. Incumbent reviews project contracts, subcontractor agreements, fee proposals and maintenance agreements for applicable financial information. Prepares internal company annual reports, financial statements, financial planning reports and models. Degree of difficulty and responsibility of specific job functions depend on position (Accountant I – III).

 

Minimum Qualifications.

  • Must be able to pass background check (which includes criminal history, credit screening, education, and employment verification) and drug screening.
  • Must be able to obtain US military security clearance.
  • Driving is required. Must have a valid driver’s license.

Education Requirements:

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in accounting, finance or related field or equivalent experience.
  • 5 - 7 years of accounting experience, preferably in the Architectural-Engineering consulting field.
  • Experience with project-based accounting procedures and accounting software.
  • Experience with Deltek Vision/Vantagepoint software is a plus.
  • Excellent computer and Microsoft Office Suite skills (mainly Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Excellent skill with Adobe Acrobat or Bluebeam Revu.
  • Competent with spreadsheets and databases.
  • General knowledge of Hawaii General Excise Tax laws and Federal and State Tax.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to exercise good judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analysis.
  • Effective time management skills to complete various tasks from different managers, within stated deadlines.
  • Possesses excellent verbal, written, and organizational skills along with a proven ability to work independently and under pressure. Adapts well to changes in work tempo.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and organize financial operations and procedures and provide recommendations to establish, maintain, coordinate, and streamline the implementation of accounting and accounting control measures.
  • Provide recommendations to streamline the input of information into financial databases, computer software systems and manual filing systems.
  • Manage and process financial data to prepare reports from the Company’s computerized financial system.
  • Monitor, review, and conduct periodic reconciliations to ensure accuracy and completeness of accounting and related system reports.
  • Manage and process cash management transactions including cash receipts and disbursements, bank account reconciliations, maintenance of checking and savings accounts, maintenance of ledgers and journal entries. Review and provide input into financing decisions.
  • Manage and process accounts receivables transactions including billing, reconciliation of outstanding accounts and addressing of collection issues. Manage and process inputs to the billing schedule.
  • Manage and process accounts payables transactions including vendor payments, subcontractor payments and reconciliation of accounts payable.
  • Prepare monthly reports including aged accounts receivable reports, project detail reports (job cost reports), accounts payable reports, P&L statements, balance sheets, and revenue and expense analysis reports.
  • Manage and process payroll, payroll withholdings, payroll taxes and tax filings, and direct deposit on a biweekly and quarterly basis. Coordinate with HR department to ensure accurate withholdings for employee benefit contributions, and paid time off balances.
  • Review contracts, subcontractor agreements, fee proposals and maintenance agreements for applicable financial information.
  • Prepare internal company annual reports, financial statements, financial planning reports and models.
  • Review and provide financial information to CFO and external CPA firms for preparation of annual financial statement and tax returns. Manage and process periodic tax related filings and payments.
  • Maintain communication with the management team; provide financial information, projections, and analysis of corporate financial performance.
  • File accounting paperwork daily to keep accounting files up to date and accurate.
  • Follows rules and procedures concerning the proper handling of confidential, personal, and highly sensitive information, to include, but not limited to employee records, documents, evaluations, social security numbers, and medical records.
  • Executes special assignments as directed; organizes and gathers requirements; plans, coordinates, and schedules; implements and monitors results.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Management. Assist other departments when necessary.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Regular standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, and reaching above/below the shoulders.
  • Occasional use of a step ladder is required.
  • Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 10 lbs. and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 40 lbs. (e.g., banker boxes).

Compensation:

  • Based on experience and qualifications.

 

Position Type/Working Conditions:

This is a full-time position.  The hours of work are Monday-Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm.  Weekends may be required.  Working conditions involve an indoor office setting and occasional fieldwork.  Travel in the local area and possible out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.
