Physical Oceanographic Researcher
Research Corporation of the University of Hawai'i seeking Physical Oceanographic Researcher.
Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Department of Oceanography, University of Hawai‘i at Manoa located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $7,333.34/Monthly.
DUTIES: Works directly with the Principal Investigator (PI) in the preparation, calibration and operation of High Frequency radars, of physical oceanography and meteorological instruments including current meters and shipboard sensors. Processes data and prepares technical data reports and contributes writings and graphics for publications. Manages data archival system. Maintains network of Linux workstations and world-wide-web servers. Interfaces electronic instruments to data acquisition systems, debugs data acquisition software, and implements telemetry channels. Work involves travel to remote locations in Hawai‘i and foreign countries to participate in field work and oceanographic cruises. Oversees undergraduate assistants and trainees. Organizes the procurement of instruments and spare parts to operate the observing systems. Broad goal-oriented responsibilities with large level of autonomy in implementing the required solutions.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/TRAINING: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Marine Science, Physical Oceanography or a closely related field to Marine Science or Physical Oceanography.
EXPERIENCE: At least six (6) years of experience in observational physical oceanography, conducting research on oceangoing research vessels and in the field. Experience with oceanographic instrumentation including Conductivity, Temperature and Depth (CTD) profilers and Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP). Experience operating and calibrating High Frequency radars.
ABILITY/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: Knowledge of computer programming. Knowledge of electronic and radio testing procedures and tools. Knowledge of oceanographic instrumentation and data logging techniques. Knowledge of Linux system management, Internet management, and security procedures. Ability to conduct data collection in the field and at sea following designated research protocols. Demonstrated ability to interact well with other personnel in high pressure environments. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to lift and carry instruments weighting up to sixty (60) pounds. Ability to work on research vessels for extended periods.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Documented prior experience with similar duties. Scientific communication skills documented by symposium presentations and publications. Knowledge of scientific logistics, in particular international customs and shipping procedures.
