The Controller acts as a business partner to the General Manager and Company Management to help attain efficiencies in operation and expense controls, increase company revenues, and develop strategic plans for the organization.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for developing operating and capital budgets, including analysis, reporting, and transmission in the Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains system.
- Oversees all accounting records and procedures, including general ledger and subsidiary ledgers, and detailed written reconciliations of all Asset and Liability Accounts.
- Assumes responsibility for monthly financial statistical, operating, and capital original budget and budget status, and tax and compliance spreadsheets.
- Holds overall responsibility for timely and accurate billing of advertising, agency, and circulation accounts.
- Creates and maintains the company’s internal control procedures and self-evaluation of the control environment reflecting the overall attitude, awareness, and actions of management.
- Manages accounting support for the strategic plan, including the development of individual goals for accounting staff.
- Oversees credit and collection function, including collection of advertising and circulation receivables and enforcement of credit policies.
- Manages the company purchase card program, accounts payable, unclaimed property reporting, and sales/use tax filings.
- Supervise accounting staff as assigned. This includes communicating organization needs, overseeing employee performance, managing workflow, and identifying training and development opportunities
- Other duties as assigned, including hiring, training, and retaining skilled accounting staff.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting preferred. CPA preferred but not required.
- A minimum of 5 years accounting experience, of which 2-3 years need to be as a supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY:
- Must be a strategic thinker, astute financial analyst, and team leader.
- Ability to juggle multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
- Must be a highly motivated self-starting individual.
- Ability to work long or unpredictable hours, in excess of 40 hours, without loss of quality.
- Ability to handle deadline stress and to work at a deadline pace when warranted. Flexibility is important.
- Computer skills in word processing and spreadsheet (word and excel) important.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is insurable by the company.
- Must carry an acceptable level of vehicle insurance as required by the company.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Regularly required to sit, stand, talk, hear, use hands to fingers, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance and stoop.
- Occasionally required to lift and /or move up to 50 pounds.
- Required to use close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.
- Works in both office setting and outside begin exposed to the elements.
- Opportunity to work remotely for a portion of the workweek.
