Title: Assistant Construction Inspector (SR-16)
Salary: $44,496 per year
Position Information:
Inspects various phases of construction projects, other than buildings, to assure compliance with plans, specifications and agreements of the work; and performs other related duties as required.
There are two (2) vacancies with the Department of Environmental Services, Wastewater Engineering & Construction Division, one (1) vacancy with the Department of Design and Construction, Civil Division, Construction Management Branch and one (1) vacancy with the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, Construction Branch.
Vacancies in Department of Environmental Services, Wastewater Engineering & Construction Division: These positions are responsible for inspecting various phases of wastewater construction projects that involve the installation of sewer lines and appurtenances. Inspections are conducted to assure compliance with plans, specifications, and other contractual agreements. These positions also inspect work for compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, such as those imposed by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). Will be required to provide personal vehicle for regular job transportation and will be compensated at the established bargaining unit rates. May be required to work shifts, evenings, nights, weekends, and/or holidays to accommodate unusual problems or workload and construction schedules.
Vacancy in the Department of Design and Construction, Civil Division, Construction Management Branch: The primary responsibilities of the position are to provide daily oversight and inspection of the City’s Capital Improvement projects involving roadways, bridges, drainage, flood control, and ADA improvements in accordance with the contract documents, plans, Standard Details & Specifications, General Conditions, Permits, including applicable National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit requirements. The position is responsible for inspecting all phases of projects with limited scope and complexity. Will be required to provide personal vehicle for regular job transportation and will be compensated at the established bargaining unit rates. May be required to work shifts, evenings, nights, weekends, and/or holidays to accommodate unusual problems or workload and construction schedules.
Vacancy in the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, Construction Branch: This position is responsible for inspecting various phases of waterworks construction projects that involve the installation of water lines and appurtenances. Inspections are conducted to assure compliance with plans, specifications, and other contractual agreements. Position requires walking through, climbing over and crawling under structures with occasional lifting and exertion for short periods; walking on uneven terrain, climbing ladders, scaffolding and stairs; exposure to hazards at construction sites and to adverse weather conditions. BWS vehicles are provided for usage on the job. May be required to work after hours, weekends and/or holidays to accommodate workload.
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to a high school education. Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
ONE (1) year of experience in inspecting or supervising construction work.
Examples of Qualifying Experience:
Inspectors, superintendents, trades supervisors, working trades supervisors, etc. with experience of such scope, level and responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position.
Substitution:
Any one of the following will substitute for the required experience:
- An Associate's degree in architectural or engineering drafting from an accredited college or university; or in the Applied Trades, Architectural, Engineering and CAD Technologies, and Carpentry Technology programs at Honolulu Community College, or similar academic programs from an accredited college or university.
- One year of general education requirement courses plus these courses from Honolulu Community College, i.e., AEC80 Basic Drafting, AEC118 Construction Materials, BLPR22 Blueprint Reading, and ICS100 Computer Literacy and Applications, or similar courses from an accredited college or university with grade of C or better.
- Up to two years of engineering courses from an accredited college or university.
- A Bachelor's degree in Architecture or Engineering from an accredited college or university.
