I. Position Information

Title: Assistant Athletic Trainer

Department: Athletics

Full Time: Nights, evenings and/or weekend work may be required.

I. Position Summary

The Assistant Athletic Trainer demonstrates intermediate knowledge and skill in standard prevention, emergency care, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation techniques. This position follows standard principles and uses appropriate medical terminology, participates as a team member in a collaborative environment, actively contributes to completion of team goals and assigned tasks, and clearly communicates in written and verbal form. The Assistant Athletic Trainer complies with and has knowledge of policies and procedures, and refers to supervisors for complex policy and procedure related decisions. This position typically works under general supervision using established procedures and protocols while performing assignments that are varied and may be somewhat difficult in character.

Direct Report to: Head Athletic Trainer

Indirect Report to: Medical professionals responsible for the care of a Student Athlete.

 

III. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


Sport Coverage

Typically provides direct care for athletic team activities. Responsible for the coverage of Chaminade University athletic teams as assigned. Provides athletic training services to physically active individuals within the athletic department. Assists in facilitating and implementing all aspects of health care for assigned team, including but not limited to: prevention, practice/event coverage, injury evaluation, physician referral, medical appointments, treatment and rehabilitation and team travel.

Decision Making/Compliance

Assistant Athletic Trainer makes daily decisions concerning the care of athletic injuries and illnesses. These decisions are based on guidelines set by the National Athletic Trainers Association, the team physician, CUH policies and Head Athletic Trainer, and updated based on current literature reviews.

Abides by all NCAA, PAC-WEST and CUH policies.

Administrative Duties

Maintains proper medical records in accordance with all government and university guidelines. Adheres to existing University and appropriate external regulatory agency (i.e. NATABOC, NCAA, etc.) guidelines and safety policies. Completes appropriate paperwork, including but not limited to: incident or injury reports for departmental accountability. Assists with sports medicine department administrative duties as assigned (no solo responsibilities.)

Communication

Responsible for day-to-day communication (including participation status) with athletes, coaches, strength & conditioning staff, physicians providing direct care to SAs, athletic department staff, and administration as assigned. Maintains effective relationships with peers; supports team decisions and goals.

Continuing Education / Professional Development

Earns and maintains appropriate professional certifications. Seeks to expand working knowledge and acquire an intermediate knowledge of advanced topics and skills within the field of athletic training, which may be demonstrated by: attending local and national meetings/conferences, holding and utilizing additional certifications, mentoring staff/students as appropriate in areas of special interest, and serving as a guest speaker within the ATEP. Stays current in related research and trends.

V. Education and Experience

 

Minimum

Master's Degree Required

BOC Certification and HI State AT License required

Experience as an Athletic Trainer in any educational institution

 

Preferred

 

Experience as an Athletic Trainer at a higher education institution

 

VI. Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

 

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and work with individuals at all levels of the university
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or related software
  • Organized with meticulous attention to detail
  • High integrity and ethical standards

 

VII. Other Requirements:

  • Must have a valid Drivers License
  • This is a full time, exempt position. Forty hours per week (M-F) will be the general rule. However, depending on the project cycles and workflow demands of the department, additional hours or workday schedule changes may be occasionally required. Must be willing and able to work occasional nights and weekends and a varying schedule.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by Supervisor and/or Principal Grant Investigator.
  • Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with safe work procedures and policies of the University. Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries in a timely and proper manner.

 

VIII. Physical Requirements

Duties involve light work in an office and community setting and requires a minimum of physical effort with intermittent sitting, standing, climbing stairs, and walking inclines. Must be able to lift 50 pounds, walk the campus with ease, and have excellent motor skills.  Must have finger dexterity. Must be able to communicate information and ideas so that others will understand.
